Stories of the Bison: Indigenous Voices and Traditions

Stories of the Bison: Indigenous Voices and Traditions is a free afternoon of storytelling, music, food, dance, and fun at Bison Courtyard in the heart of Banff.

Through traditional teachings, contemporary performances, creative activities and visual displays, guests of all ages can listen, participate and deepen their understanding of the bison’s cultural significance and continuing presence in the valley. 

Create a Bison Lantern in the style of an Iniskim Lantern (ahead of the Iniskim Lantern Performance coming to Banff in 2027) or get crafty with Listen Studios from Canmore.

Throughout the afternoon snacks and refreshments will be provided by Wild Flour Artisan Bakery and Jolene’s Tea House.

An exhibition of Joseph Sanchez’s four bison murals displayed on the exterior walls of Bison Courtyard, alongside storytelling panels highlighting the bison and its return to Banff National Park.

3:00 PM – 3:25 PM – Heather Black – Buffalo Stone Woman 
Imagine standing in the presence of the buffalo and feeling its spirit. Through storytelling, Heather explores the deep connection between the buffalo, the land, and Indigenous peoples, sharing what the buffalo has meant – and continues to mean- to her people.

3:25 PM – 4:05 PM – Ruby Eagle Child & Shayla Eagle Child-Labelle
Elder Ruby Eagle Child shares traditional buffalo teachings and stories, followed by an interactive activity led by Shayla Eagle Child-Labelle that invites guests of all ages to participate.
